Since SERI had just completed building, and was successfully testing, a one-ton/day pressurized oxygen gasifier for making methanol, it welcomed the opportunity to bring together the groups from around the world that were working in this field to share successes and problems and to learn related technology involved in biomass methanol. Biomass to Methanol is the record of that workshop. This book assembles papers written by experts on all phases of methanol manufacture from various feedstocks so that those working with biomass can take as much advantage of known technology as possible. Conventional wisdom often comes into conflict with changing conditions. Conventional wisdom suggests that synthetic fuels are most likely to be based on coal and they will be made only in very large scale, mine-mouth plants. While one can find justification for this viewpoint in history and present practice, a number of factors may make methanol from biomass, made at a much smaller scale, competitive or even more economical than coal-derived methanol. Hydrogen is attractive as a fuel of the future because it is abundant, relatively inexpensive and ecologically clean.
